Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche took a drive in Himachal Pradesh and shared his thoughts on the concept of Zero Waste for the SJI launch attendees. In particular, addresses how Zero Waste relates to the monastic environment. In this video Rinpoche strongly recommends that no packaged foods be used in tsok offerings. If monasteries were to adopt this one simple rule, just think of the mountains of Wai Wai noodle packets, plastic bottles, and candy wrappers that would no longer clog local rivers and streams after ceremonies. In Sharchop with English subtitles.

I have few things to discuss with our fellow Bhutanese.

It’s about what they call “Zero Waste” in English.

In one way, we can’t blame our people.

We are not used to it, and have no habits of such practices in our country.

Things like plastics, aluminum foil, etc. are somewhat new in Bhutan .

As a result, I don’t even have names for these items in our language.

Plastic products were not that prevalent during the days of our parents.

And they were non-existent here during the generations before our parents.

Now, plastic items like plastic cups, spoons, coca-cola bottles, etc. have become ubiquitous in our country.

These plastic products are manufactured by foreigners.

There is no doubt about this.

Thus, when foreigners advise our people not to use these products,

Saying that the plastic pollutes air, water, etc…

Our people seem to have the notion that foreigners are being hypocritical, and ridicule the advice.

I would like to plead with people to resist from reacting in this way.

On the contrary, it is imperative that we take serious note.

And act on the advice very sincerely.

Why? Because, these days there are new kinds of diseases.unknown and unheard of to us, coming into existence.

These can be attributed to pollution.

Pollution definitely leads to the emergence of different kinds of diseases.

And in Bhutan , floods and other disasters are becoming more frequent.

In one way, these disasters are due to the ignorance of our people in proper management of waste.

Therefore, there is a practice called “Zero Waste” which generally means “not wasting”.

to not to waste is very important.

How do you say “waste” in Sharshopa?

There is no word for “waste”?

To create waste is to waste our hard-earned money, and our savings.

And you know how hard it is to make money!

I am unable to explain “Zero Waste” that lucidly in our language.

But from my interactions with scientists and experts

I find the idea very much in consonance with our development philosophy of GNH, Gross National Happiness.

Therefore, I truly feel that we should practice “Zero Waste”.

I can’t force the general public to do what I say,

But, I want to bring awareness particularly to those who listen to me

Like lay monks at Bartsham Monastery and to the monks at Deothang Buddist College .

I have said this about feast offering (tsog) on few occasions in the past:

It is not at all advisable to use items wrapped in plastics during feast-offerings.

Ecologically, there are plenty of reasons to not using items wrapped in plastics for feast offerings

One, the sheer amount of items that we use in feast offerings,

Have to be thrown away later and contaminate our environment.

These plastic items, as you all might be aware of, take tens and thousands of years to decay.

The consequences of this are disasters like floods,

Trees not able to grow properly, and other such undesirable outcomes.

This is why we should make every attempt not to use items wrapped in plastics during feast-offerings.

Another reason is, it becomes like a big deception to offer items in plastics for feast-offering.

It does not involve any effort from our side;

我們並未做出任何努力;

We simply buy the things to be offered from markets, and offer it.

In past in Bhutan , our parents had a very sound culture:

They used to cook spinach, boil soya beans, prepare pancakes, etc. for feast offerings.

But nowadays people might not have luxury of time to do such things

So instead we went to a hotel or a restaurant

We could not order items like momos or porridge for feast-offerings.

The true essence of feast-offerings, or for that matter any offerings,

When it offered with pure intention, it becomes true offering.

Thus, keeping this in mind, it is of paramount importance

that we manage plastic wastes prudently.
